Beaches in Sri Lanka
Where are the best beaches in Sri Lanka? Romantic headlands, conveniently located, close to the national park, quiet and secluded with resort character or populated with cultural history? The island has about 1,600 km of coastline and on different stretches of coast - south, west, east - there are very different beach offers for travelers as well as different best travel times.
Beaches on the west coast (north of Colombo to Kalpitya) :
The best time to travel to the south and west coasts is during the German winter months (December/February to March). From May and November is monsoon season, with a little break in the months of August and September.
- Negombo Beach : Quick and easy to reach, hotel complexes, medium-beautiful beach with swimming, fish market and Christian Churches.
- Waikkal Beach : Easy to reach, club holiday
- Kalpitya Beach : Headland, close to Wilpattu National Park, peninsula with kitesurfing & ping, (pink) dolphins and whales.
Beaches on the west coast (south of Colombo to Galle) :
- Hikkaduwa Beach : Partying, surfing and the UNESCO Old Town.
- Bentota Beach : Headland with boutique hotels, luxury and seclusion
Beaches on the south coast :
There are miles of deserted beaches and many sights, but the focus has shifted from hippie resorts to package tourism since the 60s/70s.
- Tangalle Beach : Near the beach there is the turtle sanctuary Rekawa.
- Mirissa Beach : Starting point for whale and dolphin watching
Beaches on the east coast :
On Sri Lanka's east coast, the German summer months (March to August) are suitable for swimming, because between October and January there is monsoon season.

- Trincomalee Beach : It is a bathing bay and a city with cultural offerings at the same time.
- Arugam Bay Beach : The main activity is surfing
- Passikuhda Beach : Bay with beach resorts
